FROM FIELD TO FLOOR
TRACEABLE WOOL FROM THE HIGHLANDS
The Highland Clip is a collaborative project between farmers, manufacturers and customers to produce a premium product with the uniting common purposes of sustainability, traceability and fair trade.
The project started in 2021 and our first goal was to give farmers a fair price for their wool which is fixed over multiple years giving them reassurance in their business. Secondly, Highland Clip allows for a shorter supply chain, straight from sheep to shop. This brings the final customer closer to the raw material and it connects each customer with the process of manufacturing and allows for a more sustainable approach.
Over the last three years we have increased the clip from 3000kg to 10,000kg gathered from Highland farms. Our aim is to increase this further in 2025, offering wool collection from many crofts and farms across the Highlands. We have a strong demand and market for sustainable, high quality and traceable wool. The aim for the coming years is to encourage farmers to invest in premium heritage breeds of sheep which produce better quality wool than the current meat focussed flocks. We will commit to a price for the farmers which will allow them to plan forward with new stock numbers.
We have created unique products that utilise our local wool. We aim to grow our market to continue to produce high quality interior products and accessories that last a lifetime. We are supporting farmers and a local agricultural industry along the way, safeguarding its future for the next generation.
Benefits of Using Wool
Wool is a highly versatile and sustainable material. It is naturally insulating, keeping you warm in winter and cool in summer. Wool is also breathable, moisture-wicking, and resistant to odours, making it ideal for clothing. Its natural elasticity and durability ensure long-lasting use. Additionally, wool is biodegradable and renewable, contributing to environmental sustainability. Its extreme hardwearing qualities, fire-resistant properties and insulation means it is perfect for home furnishings and contract applications.
Collaborations
Collaboration between farmers and manufacturers offers numerous benefits, enhancing both agricultural and industrial sectors. This partnership ensures a reliable supply chain, improving product quality and consistency. By sharing knowledge and resources, they foster innovation and efficiency, leading to the development of new, high-quality products. Joint efforts in sustainability practices reduce environmental impact and promote eco-friendly solutions. Cost savings are achieved through streamlined operations and reduced waste. Meeting consumer demands more effectively, they boost market competitiveness and customer satisfaction. Such collaboration strengthens economic growth, creating job opportunities and fostering community development. Ultimately, this synergy enhances industry resilience and long-term success.
Demise of wool
The use of wool has declined due to several factors. Synthetic fibres like polyester and nylon have gained popularity due to their lower cost, ease of production, and versatile applications. These materials are often lighter, easier to care for, and more resistant to shrinkage and damage. Additionally, changing fashion trends and consumer preferences have shifted towards these alternatives. Environmental concerns about animal farming practices have also contributed to the decrease in wool usage. Despite wool's natural benefits, such as insulation and biodegradability, the rise of synthetic and alternative fabrics has led to a significant reduction in wool's market share. The consumer is beginning to change, demanding better quality and for things to last a lifetime.
